Libya does not sound like an every day tourist destination, and it's not. That doesn't mean that that you shouldn't go. Quite on the contrary. Libya has marvellous monuments dating back to Roman and Greek times, good souqs and lots of great desert for you to explore. The capital Triploi is well worth a visit as well.
The people are very friendly and curious. You might want to avoid discussing sensitive political topics.

Desert Libya has a lot of desert with ancient rock paintings. The Fezzan region around Sebhais one of the best destination, Ghadhames is relatively easy to reach, Ghat is another good possibility.
Roman ruins Libya has a good collection of Roman remains. Some better than most you'll find in France and Italy. Check ou Leptis Magna, Agedabia and Apollonia. They are all on the coast.
Crossing the Sahara It is possible to cross the Sahara from Libya to Chad )very difficult and to Niger (seems feasible at the moment). This last route is taken by Paris-Dakar-Cairo this year (2000).
